Postgraduate Careers

School of Medicine

In 2004, two years of primary clinical training became mandatory for medical school graduates. About 60% of our graduates complete their training at the Toho University Medical Center hospitals at Omori, Ohashi, and Sakura; the other 40% complete the clinical training at hospitals affiliated with other universities and colleges or at hospitals designated for clinical training.
Most graduates become clinicians, qualified as board certified physicians or specialists after a period of advanced clinical training, following primary training, in clinical departments. About 20% of our graduates advance to graduate study during late clinical training and pursue careers in research and academia. Some students open their own clinics and hospitals or return to family-owned hospitals after working as physicians at our hospitals.
Toho University School of Medicine encourages postgraduate study, and actively recruits interns for primary and advanced clinical training at Omori, Ohashi, and Sakura hospitals.

School of Nursing

National examinations for nurses, public health nurses, and midwives are held during the last ten days of February, when students are about to graduate from university.
After receiving the results of their examinations, more than 50% of our students are employed at Omori Hospital
—where students had their practicums—or at Ohashi Hospital or Sakura Hospital, all of which are affiliated with Toho University. Other graduates are employed by the health care centers of private corporations, or by public organizations, health and welfare centers, visiting nurse centers, and university hospitals other than Toho University. After two or three years of nursing experience, some join organizations such as the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers to promote health overseas. Others continue their study of nursing in graduate school. Toho University began its Master’s Program in Nursing in 2006.
Juniors and seniors receive extensive career guidance, and graduates employed in various fields are invited to discuss their experiences. Throughout the year, we are dedicated to helping students find the most appropriate employment.
