Message from the Chairperson

Yoshinobu Sumiyama

Chairperson of the Toho University Foundation

Yoshinobu Sumiyama

The founders of our institutions, Drs. Yutaka and Susumu Nukada, had a deep awareness that “it is our duty to contribute to society through pursuit of truth and application of knowledge to practice.” Based upon their awareness, we also realize that it is our greatest duty to “develop and produce good members of society with a vocation.”

Thus, the Toho University Foundation established Toho University with the three Faculties of Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Science and their graduate schools, Toho University Sakura School of Nursing, Toho Junior and Senior High Schools, and Komaba Toho Junior and Senior High Schools. The institutions of higher education are aimed at providing professional education and producing medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and clinical laboratory technicians as well as giving natural science education to students who hope to be researchers. Toho Junior and Senior High Schools and Komaba Toho Junior and Senior High Schools have performed their secondary education function of producing intelligent students with rich scientific knowledge as human resources of the future Japan.

The three hospitals affiliated with Toho University Faculty of Medicine, Omori Hospital, Ohashi Hospital and Sakura Hospital, have made many contributions to society by providing advanced medical treatment and care for the communities they serve, while at the same time they continue to play the role of practical, professional institutions as university hospitals for undergraduate and lifelong education. These educational hospitals are places that “develop and produce competent professionals with rich humanistic minds and a wide range of knowledge” and “teach ethics to students of medical science.”

In 2005 we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the school, and in April 2007 we started a project to more firmly establish our identity as the whole Toho University that includes affiliated hospitals and schools. The purpose of this project is to confirm the basic ideas in the book “Nature, Life and Man” authored by one of our founders and develop them in ways acceptable to our times. To be specific, we now strive to establish a revitalized institutional framework for the coming era based upon our new logo and motto, “The Life Sciences are the Gateway to the Future,” which symbolizes our founding spirit. We are determined to make steady progress toward our goal with “constant efforts,” being inspired by the spirit of “Nature, Life and Man.”
